5TH SUNDAY IS MISSION SUNDAY: APRIL ACTIVITY KITS
Sunday, April 30 will be here before you know it and we will celebrate our second-ever, church-wide Mission Sunday. Our first 5th Mission Sunday in January involved donating supplies and putting together cleaning buckets for UMCOR during the 10am Sunday School/ Discipleship Hour. We also focused on Graham, and Sharon Nicholas, the cross-cultural workers (missionaries) that we support in Ecuador.
For our second 5th Sunday, we will collect supplies and put together Summer Activity Kits for children in the Smyrna area. These kits are to be distributed through our partner elementary schools- Belmont Hills and Green Acres. Many children in Smyrna have a summer full of camps, summer vacations with family, and other organized and structured activities. However, in our community there are still children who are not able to do this. Not because their families don't want to provide them with these opportunities, but for many, the cost is prohibitive, and other factors like transportation, work schedule, etc. can also cause roadblocks for these families.
"Our goal is to put together 100 Activity Kits for children in Smyrna"
While yes, there are many more than 100 children in need, with this goal in mind we can potentially "adopt" as many as 4 classrooms of children with 25 in each class. We can always start with 100 in mind and keep going until supplies run out! Don't forget the story of Jesus and the loaves and fishes brought by a young boy!
We will also focus on two of our Cross Cultural workers on the 30th. Many of you are aware of the local things we do through our Tillman Ministries, but we also support and have supported missionaries in the field for a number of years. On April 30th, we will focus on Jessy Togba-Doya of Sustainable Liberia and Tonya Weaver of the American Foundation for Children with Aids. There is amazing work going on in the world that we actively support and we are proud to be able to focus on and listen to these two people/ organizations and how God is using them.
We look forward to seeing you on April 30th in the Fellowship Hall and look forward to seeing you for our other 5th Sundays in the future... July 30, October 29, and a special New Year's Eve Day on December 31.
